Off the beaten trail, the Edwin Carter Museum is a Colorado attraction preserving and commemorating the work of pioneer and gold-rush miner turned environmentalist Edwin Carter. Carter’s taxidermy collection demonstrates now, as it did a century ago, the negative effects of hydraulic mining on wildlife. The museum itself is in the log cabin Carter built more than 125 years ago. He lived in the cabin for 25 years, and in addition to his taxidermy collection, the museum includes interactive learning exhibits and a theater room with educational films. This museum is ideal for families looking to learn a bit about Colorado’s history and to explore Colorado’s more unique destinations.
