Corfu scores at least as many points for archaeological interest as for beaches, and if you’re of the ilk that likes one just as much as the other, you could do worse than have a poke around in the island’s Archaeological Museum. It was only founded in 1962, and with the express purpose of exhibiting and studying items found nearby, so it’s not set within an architectural icon and doesn’t have a modern pan-European restaurant. But it does have an enormous Gorgon pediment from Corfu’s Temple of Artemis – the oldest and finest of its kind – plus the Lion of Menecrates (a famous sculptor of Ancient Greece), a marble torso of Apollo, wonderful in its detail despite its being made two hundred years A.D., and the pediment of Dionysian temple. There are also lots of ancient jewels, household items, marble heads and enormous old coins. Every object has a story that happened right here, where people are enjoying their beach holidays quite unawares…
