Once known by the violent moniker “Bombingham,” Birmingham, Alabama has come a long way since the tumult of the 1960s. Rather than forming a place to only relive the horror of the turmoil, leaders chose instead to commemorate the time in a way that would foster healing by remembering the harsh realities of the past, while simultaneously celebrating the progress since made. So was the formation of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

Today, visitors are invited to experience a range of exhibits, programs, and tours that succeed in realistically portraying the past, while still managing to provide a positive hope for present and future advances in civil rights, not only in Alabama, but in the United States and throughout the world.
