Amsterdam's Historical Museum is houses in what was once a 15th century city orphanage and focuses on the city's 17th century golden age when Amsterdam was the richest city in the world. It touches on religion, culture, and history in Amsterdam and as you can imagine there is a lot to see.

Entering the building through the archway you wander into the Civic Guard Gallery that holds the kind of 17th-century portraits that gaze down on you. The following exhibitions display paintings, prints, porcelain, silver, and archaeological findings showing how Amsterdam grew though trade from a small medieval town to a legendary city. Save some time to see the digital exhibit on the growth of the city and an exhibit of stories from resident's real-life experiences. The historical exhibition is constantly being added to by temporary exhibitions dating up to present .

There are tours available to take you through Amsterdam's entire history on your multimedia map. The museum is open Mon-Fri 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sat-Sunday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm.
