Chiva Som is CondÈ Nast Traveller Readers’ Poll Choice for 2007. Meaning ‘Haven of Life’, its symbol represents mind, body and soul; this seven-acre beachfront location being more a destination spa or lifestyle clinic rather than hotel, treating the likes of Liz Hurley, and Posh and Becks. A ‘wellness consultation’ is given on arrival, checking heart and liver functioning, cholesterol and more, with a wild choice of daily massage, pilates and yoga, auricular acupuncture, wraps in seaweed, Thai fruit, flowers or salt, indoor swimming with lotus plants, cold plunge pool with rose petals, life coaching, exercise, meditation, colonic irrigation, kayaking or lazing on the beach. The food, of course, is as healthy as can be. This is the benchmark of the spa world.

I visited the Chiva Som spa last year and found that it more than lived up to its reputation as one of the finest spas in the world. The quality of service throughout is superb, from the gym trainers, to the physical therapists (ie massage)/beauty therapists and the hotel management is excellent. The food is delicious and low calorie. It has be a quiet or a social experience - I travelled there on my own but made firm friends as there is a communal 'conversation table' where I often sat and met interesting people. There is no pressure for single travellers to join this table however. Chiva Som is a highly aesthetic experience - it is a beautifully furnished and decorated hotel, the gardens are tranquil and beautifully maintained and the spa is adjacent to Hua Hin beach which is also delightful, and great for long walks as well as cycle rides. The one downside to the spa is that it is certainly not a credit crunch destination. If a shortage of funds is not a problem for you, I would highly reccomend the Chiva Som experience - it was a once in a lifetime treat for me which I did not regret for a second.
Great review Susan - you should visit some more spas, for us this time!
