Mayrhofen has a huge park, which lots of board bums say is one of the best in Europe and it used to be that most of the boarding was done there, but there is some good off piste, especially round the Gerent ridge.
One of the kings of the package holiday, Mayrhofen heaves in season, but with links all along the Ziller Valley you can still battle for space if you know what you’re doing. Beginners get crammed to the sides and the beginners runs, so if you’re learning here go with a school who’ll clear some space for you and have some good advice about the best places to practice, otherwise I recommend Ahorn. If you’re here to learn on the park be prepared to have your mind a bit blown, this is one of the big parks for tricks and there is a good chance you’ll feel like a bit of a fool practicing the basics here if you’re taller than about a metre 20. Because of the crowds the lifts have long queues.
If you’re over fighting it out on the slopes take refuge in the restaurant at the top of the Schneekar chair lift and sit in front of their huge fire. The classic hang out is the Scotland Yard Pub, but the atmosphere is good all over.
Don’t stay in Mayrhofen proper unless you’re prepared to lift it BACK to town.
