Good but –planning is needed. Busy but good with plenty of solid off piste terrain to explore and a couple of well designed parks. It’s big, but pretty well organised so it doesn’t feel that crowded, especially if you’re the sort to go looking for some empty powder in the back country. Probably the French resort most like an American resort, though I know some people are going to disagree with me there.

Alpes d’Huez gets good snowfall, but also a lot of sun, so some days you can have lost quite a bit of cover by the afternoon so go out in the mornings for the best days skiing. The lift systems are good but get busy on the weekends and in the holidays – don’t bother coming in the holiday window, too many people, but on Tuesday afternoon you can have a huge amount of space to yourself and the lifts will speed you around making the most of your time.
