The ocean between Taveuni and Matangi Islands and the coastlines of both islands are full of great places to conduct underwater explorations. The north eastern region of the Fiji islands are known for their plentiful and varied reef fish and colourful soft corals; the main problem with Fiji is the cost of staying in one of those luxurious but pricey resorts.

The best known sites are on the Taveuni side, so you may be directed there first, and by all means don’t miss out on the sites off the coast of Matangi. This whole island is an exclusive resort, however you’re still able to snorkel off the coast and here amongst the reef system of protected lagoons and barrier reef where the current is more gentle than the Somosomo Straight, you will find more varieties of reef fish than you can count; the best thing to do is hire a boat and guide to take you around in your own time or go in a kayak, the islands in this region are quite close together and the water is so clear you can see the depth and choose a good spot simply by looking overboard and following the fish! Around here the deeper, and darker, the water the larger the fish. The good thing about it being a private resort is that it’s relatively quiet and the coral and marine life is very healthy.
