Snorkeling Pigeon Cayes and Utila

Listed under Snorkelling in Honduras.

Utila has a beautiful, shallow fringing reef spreading out from it looking like a halo from the air, ensuring you don’t have to go far off shore to take advantage of the incredible snorkelling conditions. In many places the shallow reefs end in dramatic steep drop offs where the marine life, terrain and temperature changes quickly and dramatically. The Bay Islands offer some of the best spots. You can walk in with your mask on off the beach, which is especially attractive for beginners and people with kids, but there are also boat services taking you further out onto the reef to some quieter spots known for snorkelling. Pigeon Cayes is a personal highlight. Attached to the larger Jewel Cayes, which has the dive school offering snorkel hire and the like, by a long wooden bridge. You need to get to Pigeon or Jewel Cayes by boat but once you’re there you can snorkel off the beach. About 250 people live on tiny Jewel and Pigeon Cayes (which take about seven minutes to walk the entire length of) as well as a healthy population of birds. If you’re on the main island Half Moon Bay Resort has good snorkelling off the beach at either end. You’ll see lots of marine life, octopi, eels, turtles, rays, shrimps and the same generous coloured coral you get around all of Utila.
