Perhaps the finest snorkeling and diving in the Galapagos is to be found off Floreana island at Devil’s Crown, an extinct volcanic crater located a few hundred meters offshore. Here one can find vast schools of brilliantly colored angelfish, Moorish idols, parrotfish, and other beauties of the tropics that in other places are usually appreciated in ones or twos rather than by the hundreds. Triggerfish, hogfish, the aptly named Guineafowl pufferfish, various colorful wrasses, white-tip reef sharks, green sea turtles and playful sea lions all compete for one's attentions in a crystal clear undersea landscape of lava pinnacles and gaping caverns. The visibility is often over 100 feet. On occasion large schools of hammerhead sharks congregate here.
