Sandy bottomed with excellent visibility, this calm cove is well protected and shallow and just off one of Hawaii’s most idyllic, white beaches. The best snorkeling is at the far right end of the beach where the coral flats you’ll want to examine are closest to the shore. The best variety of life lives along the coral ledge here, expect to spot parrot fish, peacock bass, jacks, butterfly fish, parrot fish, tang and the odd turtle. In the evening the main show begins, the Mauna Kea Hotel floods the cove with light attracting plankton and manta rays into the sandy central area. Good for kids and beginners and surprisingly not too crowded.
