A pair of elegantly decorated 16th-century mansions a short walk apart in the picturesque Albaicin quarter

Recently declared a Unesco World Heritage Site, the Albaicin is the historic Moorish quarter of Granada, a steep hillside of cobbled lanes, crumbling churches and slightly tattered townhouses. Like jewels waiting to be polished, most of the buildings look jealously across to the magnificent hilltop fortress of the Alhambra (another Unesco site, of course). But two of these jewels have been polished until they gleam. The Palacio (palace) and Carmen (gardened villa) of Santa Ines are compact 16th-century residences based around an inner patio, both lovingly restored by art aficionado Nicolas Garrido Berastegui.

The Palacio attracts a more established clientele, including Spaniards admiring the latest paintings on show around its first floor landing. The Carmen is newly opened, with a delightful little garden and a variety of younger guests from around Europe. Both of them have grand gates opening onto a calm, colonnaded patio.
