I remember watching the Lillehammer Winter Olympics on TV, which is probably where most people know the name from, so it's got some winter sports credentials from that already. These days I wonder how stressed the organisers must be about snow conditions, but the Lillehammer guys probably didn't need to lose any sleep, the season here is long and regular, lasting from mid November to the end of April.

Hafjell is the resort where most of the Olympic action happened, and the runs here have a reputation of being near perfect. There are plenty of choices for beginners and intermediate skiers, as well as those with Olympic ambitions – think wide, neat, tree lined pistes. There's also a reputable ski school and snow park with the jumps and pipes you'd expect.

There's cross country skiing all around, and they have all the usual value adding extras like dog sledding and ice skating and tobogganing.
