Described as the last big wilderness in Western Europe, Lapland is well worth a visit (even if you don't plan on visiting Santa). There are some fantastic skiing facilities, the most famous being Hemavan Resort. It boasts some great facilities and has 33 runs and 14 lifts. They offer skiing for all levels of ability and the slopes remain relatively uncrowded until late April. The resort itself is located at the base of the Tarna Mountains and has several hotels on offer. They offer alpine skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing as well as having some of the best Heli Skiing in Europe, using the continent's largest nature reserve (555 000 hectares to be exact) as a drop off point. Experienced guides accompany every trip and it’s a great opportunity to take in the spectacular views and negotiate the fast, exciting terrain. There are various other pursuits in the area including ice driving in cars, quad biking, and snowmobiling.
