Part of the world’s longest lava tunnel, this cave was formed in almost an instant around three thousand years ago as molten lava met its match in the cool sea. Some sections of cave almost seem to drip, though not in the same way as a stalactite might, the drops are more rounded.

The show cave section has been open since the 60’s when a 2km long pathway was cut into the rock and lighting added to show the cave off to its most effective, but the caves off the tunnel have been used by the local people for centuries, either to live in to hide from pirates in. Some sections of cave and tunnel are very deep and some have filled with sea water.

A minor clarification is that the caves aren’t at all green – they were named after a family whose last name was Verde rather than the colour. They have been artfully and colourfully lit for the public though. In one of the caverns a concert hall has been constructed with holds around 500 people.

Some reports suggest there is a secret to the cave unveiled at the end of the guided tour, and though there’s talk of ‘the secret’ no one has blabbed to the rest of the internet about what it is…
