That this 20km long cave system is one of the biggest visitor attractions in Slovenia says one of two things – you can probably infer what those things are, but be assured that it's the good one that is the case – that this is a really, really interesting cave system.  As well as being the longest cave system in the country it also has some pretty spectacular karst formations, including a stalagmite called 'Brilliant' which looks almost like a Classical column it's so well formed.  One of the other unique features are the olm, the largest trogloditic amphibian in the world and a really unusual looking creature - almost human-like in its fleshy-ness. 

Postojna has been a tourist attraction for more than a hundred years.  It's so popular that electric lighting was installed here before it was installed in some towns in the region.  Visitors can delve more than five kilometres into the cave – which is further than any other show cave in the world.  

They have a train if you don't like the sound of all that walking, and the train guided trip takes about an hour and a half.
