This system of caves, enhanced by man, began as the world’s longest lava tunnel, but as the roof collapsed in in various places large caves and caverns, locally called jameos, were revealed. Local artist Cesar Manrique put in his ten cents worth of ideas on how these caves could be used and convinced the rest of the island that they were the perfect setting for an Auditorium, swimming pool, restaurant and gardens. The Auditorium has been especially successful – the acoustics are supposed to be excellent – and is used almost daily for traditional music and folklore shows and some evenings as a disco.

The Jameo Chico, an underwater lagoon flooded with sea water is home its very own species of Blind Albino Crab, as well as a restaurant/ bar, and is the entry point for the complex, the first cave you enter after climbing down the steep stone staircase. The next cave in the system is the Jameo Grande, the star of many photos, this pool is the most perfect of blues and surrounded by tropical vegetation including palm trees and bougainvillea.

The final jameo holds a small scientific museum, the Casa de los Volcanoes where you can get some more information about the island’s volcanic heritage and the formation of the lava tunnels and jameo caverns

A huge sculpture of one of the endemic crabs marks the above ground entrance.
