Rainfall has worn narrow canyons and sinkholes into Puerto Rico’s soft limestone, creating a web of underground caverns and water systems. Not many people realise what’s below the ground here, but there’s some scenery just as attractive as what’s above ground, some of the most spectacular is at the Rio Camuy Cave Park. Touted as one of the top three cave systems in the world, based on both size and drama, only a very small part of this complex is open to the public

After the bilingually guided tram tour though Clara Cave’s vegetation thick mouth, and past the impressive stalactites and stalagmites you’ll walk across the ramps and bridges to enter the dramatically lit 200 foot high chamber and probably gasp at the size of it – you could fit a 20 storey building in here. Further along is the 400 foot deep Tres Pueblos Sinkhole and the Spiral Sinkhole which you can climb 205 stairs down into. The great expanses of wall of Cathedral Cave have been decorated with ancient rock carvings.

It’s a lot better to visit in the morning before the crowds and the rain which often stop play for the tours because the Rio Camuy, the world’s third largest subterranean river and the reason these caves exist, floods. If you consider yourself a caver beyond the normal tour, you can book a place in a rappelling tour though some of the unmarked sections of cave. If you’re just there for the sights there’s a theatre, exhibition hall, café and gift shop.
