Oh to be Odysseus, offered immortality in return for loving Calypso and staying with her in this cave on beautiful Malta. But this arrangement was not to his taste and he lasted seven years before he escaped and continued his epic journey home from the Battle of Troy to his wife Penelope.
We don’t know if Odysseus was a real person, or if he was a real person who went on a great journey or not, and if he did go on a great journey then where he went, but if you believe all those things then this cave is supposed to be Calypso’s cave – who, as a nymph, you may or may not believe in. What you can definitely see when visiting this cave are some very beautiful views over the ocean, probably worthy of a sea nymph if they ever existed.
The cave is a flight of stairs downwards over the cliffs near the red sand of Ramla Bay, then a walk along a short platform where you can admire the view. Inside it’s a series of narrow chambers linked by even narrower passages. The complex is supposed to be a huge labyrinth going all the way under the ocean but it’s blocked off by fallen boulders after a few chambers.
