While in Argentina, it is well worth checking out the local designers, and Palermo Viejo is the place to do it. There are more than 100 boutiques with eye catching window displays that have hip clothing and funky jewelry, as well as unusually scented soaps and candles and chunky tunics made of Andean wool. The real bargains can be found here- if you skip Palermo Viejo, you'll miss out on the homemade and eclectic goods, and the chance to shop like a true porteño (Buenos Aires native). For an authentic cafe nearby, grab some snacks at Malasartes in Plaza Serrano, a beautifully decorated restaurant with old brick walls.

Shop for: Colorful jewelry, inexpensive leather

Cafe Stop: Malasartes

Get here: Take the green line to Palermo Hollywood and Ministro Carranza for Palermo Alto.
