Sidi Bou Said

The white walls and beautiful blue doors and roofs are what make this picturesque spot on the bay more than just another Tunisian coastal town. The lattice work of the windows, and door frames, and decoration in detailed iron are all painted the famous blue of the Med – a proper azure of the clearest sky. The doors are then decorated with the designs of North Africa, and open to reveal courtyards tiles with mosaics. There’s a chicken and egg question to ask yourself about Sidi Bou Said – did the great artists move here because it’s an aesthetically pleasing town or did it become more attractive under their influence?

These days the mystery is gone and the wealthy workers of Tunis do the commute daily, the tourist buses passing them on the way, as visitors drop in for the day to shop for an eclectic selection of souvenirs – some of them not even Tunisian in flavour – and they have their mint teas with pine nuts in one of the courtyards admiring the view.
