Pushed against the Caribbean by the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains, this colonial port has been an important spot on the map for traders, explorers and tourists since the mid 16th Century. Luxury flats and hotels line the sweeping beach while beautifully preserved Spanish colonial architecture creeps up the mountainside.
