Roatán, the best known of Honduras’s Bay Islands, is surrounded by a rich living reef which makes it ideal for scuba divers but also provides an inner coastline with relatively calm waters. West Bay, on the island’s northern rim, has what is reputedly one the best strips of beach on the entire Central American Caribbean coastline. At the western end of the beach, guests at Infinity Bay Spa and Beach Resort can launch on top-seat kayaks included in activities. Once you are out a hundred yards or more you have a wonderful sense of solitude here apart from the tiny figures back on shore. The occasional water taxi shuttles by occasionally, along with fishermen headed out to deeper waters, but otherwise you have the long and gently curving perimeter of beach on one side, the southern Caribbean stretching out to the horizon on the other.

Another kayaking option is at Sandy Bay, a small and very quiet bend further east along the coast lined with dense foliage and a few homes and businesses. Anthony’s Key Resort lies at the eastern end of Sandy Bay, and Anthony’s Key itself is actually the resort’s own islet just offshore. They provide guests with all day use of single and double top-seated kayaks kept at the taxi boat stand at the Key’s southern tip. From here you can launch westward to explore the channel between Anthony’s Key and neighboring Bailey’s Key which has its own small kayak launch beach where you can pull up, also a dolphin encounter area nearby. Waters are choppy at times but easy to navigate. The area ranges from clear shallows of white sandy bottoms to deeper blue depths.
