Not just England’s largest National Park, the Lake District National Park also has England’s highest mountain, Scarfell Pike, and its deepest lake, Wastwater. Pockets of human habitation thrive inside the boundaries of the park as well – Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere, where you can base yourself comfortably - or else stay in one of the quiet B&Bs or guest houses dotted thoughout the hills and dales.
Sure, come to enjoy the scenery, but the Lake District National Park looks even more beautiful if you’re a little lost in it, on one of the three and a half thousand kilometres worth of walking and cycling trails or admiring the view from a position slap bang in the middle of one of the 16 lakes.
If you’re cycling, or if you have a wheelchair or push chair in your party, the nice people at the Lake District National Park website can fix you up with one of their Miles Without Stiles route maps, to save you a lot of inconvenience. If you’re all about the inconvenience head straight for the felltops for a decent scrambling and some scaling and ridge walking. The best mountain biking trails are in Whinlatter and Grizedale Forests, but the whole area is criss crossed with cycleways, country lanes and bridleways – so bring your horse power if you have some. There so many options for both one day and extended walking and cycling journeys staying overnight in campsites, hotels or B&B’s that there’s really got to be something for everyone.
If you like the idea of coming to the Lake District to get out on one of the lakes then Coniston, Derwentwater, Ullswater and Windermere all have watersport centres where you can hire a boat, water skis, or other water based activity gear.
