Sailing the Coast of Galicia

Listed under Sailing in Vigo, Spain.

Rias means estuary, not usually the sailors delight, but the ones around Vigo are drenched in fishing, meaning also boating, history and in this case the estuaries feed into pretty bays and harbours. Sailors used to be traders, explorers, naval men or fishermen, and Vigo was one of the most important fishing ports in Europe. That means expect plenty of good grub. And wine as well, the hills behind the coast have great conditions for vineyards.

The shape of the land is interesting, it’s flat for a while then rises, so you get these long narrow towns crushed against the waters edge with the mountains poking over the roofs of the high rises. Plenty of pretty, tiny islands make up the rest of the scene. Isles from the Cies and Ons groups tend to have golden beached coves and shallow inlets perfect for kids to swim in.

My trip ended in Santiago at the end of the Pilgrim’s way, so we could visit the churches with the pilgrims and see all the spectacle of it without the footwork. Pretty ports line the way along the coast, so our seven day trip could have been easily extended.
