It’s a bit rough and ready along Lamu’s Swahili coast, but the experience of being taken out in a traditional fishing dhow, the same fishermen and traders have been using in this area for centuries will make you forget that it’s a bit grubby and questionably sea safe if you’ve any romance in your blood.

There are fishing villages all along the coastline and the general idea is to hop between them and the mangroves dripping in exotic birds and bursting with sea life that hasn’t been bothered by people – turtles, dolphins and whale sharks, there is the potential to meet them all.

Unless you want to buy your own boat you’re going to be going out in a boat that probably works part time fishing and you’re going to be sailing with the same crew. Like the dirt, the cultural differences and the banter of the locals adds to the fun and authenticity of the experience if not the sailing – it’s unlikely they’ll let you do anything but play lord of the manor and trail your fingers in the water behind, or go snorkeling or swimming off the boat.

Lamu itself is a fantastic place to visit, ancient and car-less it’s culture and architecture is a proper and fascinating mish-mash of origins.
