Until Recently the Emerald, or rainy season was not a popular time to visit Zambia's South Luangwa national Park. All that changed when Mchenja Bushcamp was opened in January, February and March 2007. This was the first time that any of the Luangwa's bushcamps had operated at this time of year and the result was spectacular.

With access only possible by boat, once in the camp guests knew that they were among the privelaged few. The Luangwa in full flood is an awsome sight but the real fun is when you explore its tributaries and the smaller gullies that are so prolific at that time of year. Floating through a flooded ebony grove is one of the most enchanting, mesmorising experiences going.

Walking is also possible from Mchenja at this time of year, vehicular access is not possible so most activities are a combination of boating and walking. Birdlife is abundant as many migrants have arrived in Zambia from further north so they are invariably displaying breeding plumage and indulging in luxuriant song. The animal life, as ever in the Luangwa is prolific and ever present.

Combining a few days at Kapani Lodge in the main Mfuwe area with a few at Mchenja in these greener months is an experience only available to a few but one simply, not to be missed.
