Jetavanaramaya is the largest stupa in Anuradhapura at around 400ft high and with a volume of 2.5million square feet. When it was built it was the third tallest structure in the world behind the pyramids. But this proves the architectural ingenuity of the Sri Lankan people. They had to dig deep pits to lay the foundations, and they used elephant labour to stamp down the new floors. It would have taken them about 15 years to build it, but it's an epic building that anyone would have been proud to work on.

10,000 Buddhist monks would have lived in and around this building when it was full and working.
