This national historic byway is a 75-mile route offering uniquely-Colorado scenic vistas of towering peaks and sweeping valleys. Elevated for the most part above 9,000 feet, this route is known for passing the famed Tennessee Pass and notorious Leadville.

Leadville, the highest community in the United States, captures the area’s intriguing history and offers adrenaline packed adventure options. Historians will appreciate the story of the area’s gold rush, mining & railroad booms and busts and Camp Hale where troops in the 10th Mountain Division trained for World War II. The byway traverses the Rocky Mountain’s 10,424-foot Tennessee Pass and three National Parks – Pike National Forest, San Isabel National Forest and White River National Forest. Wildlife sightings along the byway are common. Look out for Big Horn Sheep, Prong Horn Antelope, Red tail Foxes, Deer, Elk, Pica, Mountain Goat in particular.

Take your time driving this rural, scenic route and you will surely find sites, information, activities and history to suite your own unique tastes and interests. If you plan on staying along the byway, Leadville offers dining and accommodation.
