The Mohawk Trail is the perfect drive for those in search of the wide open road surrounded by a striking mountain backdrop dotted with quaint historic New England towns, and 50,000 miles of preserved national parks. What started as a Native American trade route now begins in Greenfield, Massachusetts in the Berkshire Mountains, winding along the Millers and Deerfield Rivers to Williamstown, MA near upstate New York. At only 95 kilometres long the drive can easily be done in one afternoon with a quick stop for lunch at a café in one of the small local villages, but for a real adventure, this drive is best done slowly with lots of detours into the forests and surrounding towns. The Mohawk Trail is a good drive at any time of year with great spots for hiking, fishing and swimming in summer, skiing in winter and apple picking amongst the fall foliage. In the spring, cruise off the Trail to the Bridge of Flowers in nearby historic Shelburne to see over 500 species of flowers in bloom. For a history lesson a stop in any one of the nearby towns is a great afternoon break to stretch your legs.
