The 'Castle Road' scenic route from Mannheim to Prague runs for approximately 1,000km though historic towns, next to ancient castles and across picturesque countryside - clearly signposted along the way. The Neckar Valley sprawls from both sides of the car, revealing the Neckar River, which weaves around hills carving up the land. The Hohenlohe plain reaches out as far as the eyes can see, followed by the rolling Franconian Heights, elegantly draping the countryside with green hills and valleys full of flowers.
With over 70 castles and palaces to see, you may not want to stop at all of them - pick a few to explore, like the Castle of Heidelberg and the fairytale Castle of Neuenstein. Consider an overnight stay at Castle Hotel, Colmberg, which is over 1000 years old and boasts scenic, Franconian views. Or stay in bed and breakfasts in the historic towns which Castle Road weaves through, like Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the best preserved medieval towns in Germany. Hall and Rothenburg also offer small town charm and ancient architecture.
Castle Road passes giant baroque castles hovering above Renissance towns and nestled into wine-growing country. The road winds around orchards, over streams, and through valleys decorated with princesses palaces and quaint towns all the way to Prague.
