1250 miles demand several weeks of hedonism rather than a quick trip. Bangkok’s splendour arises at the markets and the Grand Palace, with its Temple of the Emerald Buddha, a canal boat away from Wat Pho. Head south-east through jungle to white beaches and to Khao Sok National Park for waterfalls and rainforest wildlife. British settlement of Georgetown leads to tea plantations in Cameron Highlands with a superb drive on to Kuala Lumpar, home of the Petronas Towers and Batu Cave. Melaka is renowned for poor accommodation, but Cheng Hoon Teng temple and Kampung Kling Mosque should make it worthwhile. Then the metrolpolis of Singapore, the Island State.
