An epic trip through Australian wet grasslands, surreal beauty and exotic wildlife. This is a 3700km stretch from tropical North Queensland, through the Northern Territory along to the town of Broome. There are numerous tropical savannahs and national parks, with an extraordinary variety and number of rare birds. Ord River is a noteworthy landmark, being able to swim in freshwater pools while crocodiles laze about on the riverbanks. Geikie Gorge National Park and Fitzroy Crossing are truly special and worth visiting, with wild forests growing passionfruit and figs among other fruit. Most important of all is Cable Beach in Broome, spoken of as the best beach in the world.

The Observer February 5 2006

'How far to the next town, mate?'

Kevin, the petrol pump attendant, sucks on his cigarette and swigs his can of lager. 'About four cans at a steady 150mph. Hell, take a crate.'

They do things differently in the Australian outback.
