The 339km journey from Reykjavik to Akureyri passes all kind of varied and interesting sights, from volcanoes, to farmlands, to hot springs, all in a journey that can be comfortably done in a day or spread over multiple days of relaxed exploration and driving.
Starting in Reykjavik the site seeing begins before you even get in the car, with the Reykjanes Peninsula and the Blue Lagoon - then there's the Kerið volcanic crater, Gullfoss waterfall, and Geysir hot springs. The drive starts along Hvalfjord and then heads north into the Borgarfjörður Valley, where there are waterfalls, hot springs and historic sites to be explored.
Next, along Highway 1, is the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the unique fishing village, Stykkishólmur. Admire the glacier covered volcano, Snæfellsjökull, which you can journey to the top of if weather permits.
Further north is the Skagafjörður, the Valley of the Horses, where it's said horses outnumber people. There is water rafting, horse riding and trekking available for the less time pressed roadtripper, and beautiful sites to be seen through windows for the daytrippers. Continue across the valley and into the northern town of Siglufjörður, where there's a historic church and charming buildings. Back on the road, and the end of the trip arrives as you pull into Akureyri, the second largest town in Iceland.
