Loch Lomond is only half an hour from Glasgow and a little more than an hour from Edinburgh, and even closer to Stirling, so this is a road trip that can be done in an afternoon – well this is a fairly small island. It starts to get scenic around Aberfoyle, where this recommended route takes the A821 to Callander, home to Doune Castle, which was used in Monty Python's Holy Grail, then take the A84 and 85 to Killin – via Balguhidder, home to the grave of Rob Roy – then follow this scenic section of loch around to Alexandria. If you have time pop over to Stirling and Stirling Castle for views over the Forth Valley and a chance to pay homage at the Wallace Monument and tick off all the big names in cinematic kilt dramas from recent years.
The Trossachs provide a varied backdrop of mountains that fall into rolling hills and lochs that run to rapids. 'They' call it 'The Gateway to the Highlands', for obvious reasons but what that name doesn't imply is that as well as lowlands and highlands, this area is made up a wealth of other habitats and home to the huge variety of species that this range of habitats can support, including deer, osprey and golden eagles. And Loch Lomond has the honour of being the UK's largest body of water, but it also has some nice looking pubs and old castles along its shores.
