The strange rocky tor tiles of the Giant's Causeway aren't the only attraction along this drive, but they're the one that gets most people excited about a drive along the Irish coast between Belfast Lough and Lough Foyle. The soft, rolling glens, ruined and not so ruined castles, pretty towns, quiet beaches and photo-ready views are the unexpected fancy icing on an already interesting cake.
Starting just out of Belfast at Newtownabbey, the route takes car-fuls by the Norman castle at Carrickfergus, the port of Lame, and through the glens of Antrim, before running though numerous pretty seaside towns – Cushendun is worth stopping in, as is Ballycastle for a quick ferry trip out to Rathlin Island.
The world's oldest distillery is en route as well, it's called Bushmills, and it's in Bushmills. If a break from the car is needed, and you're driving - so a distillery is possibly not the best idea - there's a pretty spectacular golf course at Portrush and one of Ireland's best known castles, 14th Century Dunluce Castle, a short drive away.
This is the kind of trip that you could take your time over visiting all the towns and castles, or breeze along on a sunny afternoon with the top down.
