The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic winding route through the mountains, from Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park, heading south through pristine wilderness highway, to end up in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. The 755 km drive turns the car’s windshield into a picture frame with each bend revealing another blue-grey mountain vista. Take this route in the autumn to add bright oranges and red to the image, the trees on fire with the colours of Fall.

Pull off the road to experience a preserved bit of parkland with lots of shady places to have a picnic, or leave the car and explore the mountains on foot. Break up the driving into a few days and stop at Humpback Rocks to see Appalachian skills and traditions demonstrated, and stay in cozy camp grounds along the way.
