The Murray and its tributary, the Darling, make up the longest river complex in Australia, and support some of Australia’s most unusual plant and aquatic life, including the iconic river red gum.

The Murray was integral to the exploration of Australia’s interior. It was also used as a trade route towards the coast, but the mouth isn’t wide enough for ocean going ships to enter. Paddle boats are still a popular form of transport on the river and most river traffic is recreational. It's a calm river journey along muddy waters and between graceful grey green gums and white scribbly bark trees.

The Murray’s water starts out on Mount Kosciusko and separates New South Wales from Victoria before flowing through South Australia and into the Southern Ocean.
