There are very few reasons to go to Eindhoven, frankly. Not that it's a nasty place; it's just quite nondescript when compared with other more unique destinations in the Netherlands. But on my last visit there I found a reason why someone else should go there. Wok Paradise is an unassuming little door at the end of a rank of shops right by the church in the centre of town. It tooks like a clean but basic takeaway. But the first appearances are deceptive. Up the slightly skanky stairs is a huge open plan Asian fusion buffet restaurant. For the princely sum of 18 euros (15 pounds) you can eat as much as you can stuff in your gob at Wok Paradise. It's not snide stuff either that's been sat around for several days; the food quality is superb.

So what's the plan of attack at Wok Paradise? My Dutch friend and I normally head straight for the Asian chef in the corner standing behind the Teppanyaki griddle. Oh yes. I let my friend order, as I'm embarrassed to ask for too much stuff, but my Dutch friend has no such hangups. She usually orders ten lamb chops and ten shrimps, which are freshly cooked in front of us. That's the starter. Then it's on to the sushi (a small but fair tasting selection), stir fry, the sweet and sour, another teppanyaki course, and finally ice cream. €18 is a lot of cash out of my travel budget, as when in Holland I'm usually a miser who prefers to live off €1.50 portions of chips for my dinner, but Wok Paradise has been the exception on my travels through the flatlands. I might even go back to Eindhoven because of it.

In the centre of town, by the church.
