Every night for five nights running we walked past this restaurant and it was full. So on our last night we made an effort and went out early to make sure we got a table. And it was worth the added investment. Okonomiyaki the food is like a savoury pancake/ omelette cross made with cabbage, bean sprouts and other stuff. Okonomiyaki the restaurant serves the food, other local noodle based pancake type meals and other tepanyaki dishes. For people a bit wary about Japanese food it's perfect – no raw fish or indistinguishable food types and your meal is prepared on a hot plate not far from your table then transferred to a hot plate on your own table – all unusual condiments served on the side.

You can at western style tables and chairs, along the bar or at Japanese tables where you sit on the floor, so even the setting is user friendly. In fact user friendly has to be the title of this review – it's easy to order, easy to eat – you're given a hot plate slicer server thing which means you don't have to break your pancake up with chop sticks which could be a bit challenging – and tasty. Good value as well. Have the okonomiyaki...

Just down the street from the Western Miyako Hotel, which is why it's probably so full. Go left after exiting the hotel and it's a few minutes walk and on the opposite side of the road.

The most delicious meal!

For anyone staying at the Westin Miyako hotel in Kyoto at least one meal in this little restaurant is an absolute must!!!!! And if you can have more, lucky you! My experience was similar to your reviewers - impossible to get in as it was packed every time we attempted the visit but the night we were successful - WOW! Great food, friendly staff, excellent service and realtively inexpensive - it could not have been a better experience.
