A city enriched by its literary references. Caffe San Marco at via Battisti 18 is often noted for such references, and it is a wonderful café, but my heart has to go to Caffe Tommaseo. Overlooking the sea it triumphs with its classical Viennese café culture and old world charm. Upon entering, you feel as if time’s stood still and all that matters is classical music, literature, and good espresso.
An impeccably dressed elderly gentleman approached me, as I was drinking my coffee and writing by hand in my journal. He didn’t speak English and I didn’t speak Italian. But with very few words he told me to continue writing by hand and not by machine, because by holding the pen in fingers, what I was writing came into my hand, through my arm, and straight from my heart. And then using his cane, this impeccable man in his tweed suit walked away. Only at Caffe Tommaseo’s!
