The European festival of Saint John takes on a whole new look and life in Brazil where it's been morphed into a kind of mini carnival with a rural theme.

The Portuguese introduced the festival, but while its held at the same time, around the European Midsummer, in Brazil it's the beginning of winter so there are entirely other things that need to be celebrated – mostly the rain and the finish of the rain depending on the exact location and how the weather's been over the past year. The rural themes of rain and harvest have become central to the celebrations, which now involve dressing up like a farmer – preferably in gingham for the girls and short trousers with braces for the men. Once the outfits are donned it's time for some country style dancing before the whole thing deteriorates into a dancing, drinking, firework displaying spectacular of exuberance – the kind Brazil is so well known for.

The famous Festas Juninas don´t happn in Rio de Janiero city. If any tourist goes during June to the city, he/she will NOT see anything going on. These festivities are very famous in the north-east cities of the country.
