Since the 1870's the Dangenong Ranges have been a popular place for walkers and people wanting to escape the towns and cities for the bush. Scenic, and forested in thick green, the ranges peak at Mount Dandenong, 633 metres above sea level, so these are more rolling hills than sharp mountains. Some of the most interesting sights are in the valleys, lush with a temperate rainforest or bright green ferns and tall Mountain Ash trees.

Old B&Bs survive amongst newer hotels and hostels, but lots of visitors still come up from Melbourne for the day, many on the Puffing Billy steam train. There's no camping allowed in the park and there are no bins, so there are limited options for people planning a long distance walk – there are plenty of great day trip options though.
