About 250 eastern lowland gorillas, thought to be one of the last communities of their kind, inhabit Kahuzi-Biega National Park, making it a very special place. Several other mammals, birds and reptiles also call the park home, including forest elephants and chimpanzees. Two spectacular, yet extinct, volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega, give the park its name.

Many conservation groups are trying their best to protect the gorillas and their friends from the evil poachers and other mayhem that is currently affecting the Congo. Although tourism to the area is closely monitored, it is allowed and chances to see the gorillas in their natural setting exist and tourism has a positive effect on the park because it can provide important funds for the preservation efforts.
