This park in Nigeria’s south east corner covers an area of diverse environments including tropical rainforest, montane forest and mangrove swamps and is criss-crossed by the streams and rivers it is named for. It is particularly biologically diverse and houses species of plants and animals probably undiscovered. So far more than 70 species of endemic plant and more than 25 endemic animals have been found here, some which were unknown until their discovery in the Cross River National Park. Endangered species of Baboon, Leopards and Gorillas reside in the park as well as other exotic animals such as Antelopes, Buffaloes, Forest Elephants, Wild Pigs, Manatees, Chimpanzees and other monkeys. Local people still inhabit the park as they have done for generations and there is some concern that the needs of the villages compete too strongly with the need for conservation. It does also mean that this amazing environment can be visited without the need to cut through too much red tape and an ‘eco-lodge’? has recently been built within it’s grounds, predominantly for Nigerian Americans looking for their roots. The Cross River National Park and the Oban Hills region lies beside the Korup National Park in Cameroon. This combined area is an important focus for the WWF in Nigeria where work is being done to combat illegal hunting, logging and land clearing and implement conservation action plans.

i THINK AS MUCH THE FLORAL AND FAUNAL CONSTITUENT IS TALKED ABOUT, I THINK IT IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT TO PUBLISH ARTICLE ABOUT THE SOCIOECONOMIC ATTRIBUTES OF THE INHABITANTS. I HAIL FROM THE OKWANGWO DIVISION OF THE PARK AND I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SEEMING POVERTY DRIVEN DEGRADATION AND I PLAN TO TAKE A THESIS ON IT.THANKS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY. JUDE-SOUZA.
