Not as touristy as most of North Queensland, the Atherton Tablelands is a different kind of wilderness to the Daintree and Barrier Reef country along the coast. This lush wilderness region is set on high plateaus squeezed between some of Australia’s most spectacular mountain regions and the ocean, Cairns is only about an hour and a half away by car. The Atherton Tablelands cover both thick forests of ferns and hazy waterfalls and a drier red stony interior.

This is a self-drive holiday region, with lots of different things to do, the main attractions centre around the wildlife and landscape of the country. There are plenty of walking trails and birds to watch, as well as camping and water sports like kayaking, white water rafting and fishing. Some of the best wildlife action takes place after the sun has gone down when possums and sugar gliders joining kangaroos and wallabies who are often more active in the cool of the evening.

This isn’t pure wilderness though, it’s littered with small towns like Atherton, near a limestone cave system and Millaa Millaa which has a majestic waterfall trail. The reddish volcanic soil and good rainfall has populated the Atherton Tablelands with farmers growing avocados, mangos, macadamia nuts, corn and cattle.
