The Snake River is another well-known recreational river that runs through the northwest United States. Many different locations and states take advantage of the Snake River and its waters as it flows from its northern origin down south and west through its lower course.
The Snake River originates from inside Yellowstone National Park in the Wyoming area. It is a major tributary of the Columbia River. The river reaches a total 1,040 square miles and usually maintains about 56,900 cubic feet per second of water flow (depending on the specific location and time of year). The Snake River helps to form the boundaries between that line Idaho with Washington and Oregon.
The Snake River is probably most well known for having the deepest gorge in the world. Known as Hell’s Canyon, this gorge reaches up to 7,900 ft deep at certain points. Not other gorge in the world compares to it’s massive depth.
The most popular activities along the Snake River are whitewater rafting and fishing. The most popular stretches of the Snake River white water rafting are the upper portions going through Jackson Hole, and then the middle portion going through Hells Canyon. Many rafting outfitters offer single-day and multi-day expeditions through these various stretches of the Snake River.
