The Kennebec River is located is the west-central portion of Maine. The origination of the river is from Moosehead Lake, in north-west Maine. Because of its eastern location, the river flows all the way into the Atlantic Ocean.
River rafting is a popular activity along the Kennebec River. Certain stretches of the river lend to great whitewater rafting and technical paddling for locals and visitors.
The Upper Kennebec Gorge is the popular Maine rafting destination. The lower sections offer mild whitewater and great scenic trips.
Since the dam removal in 1999, fishing also became a popular activity for the first time in over 100 years. Salmon, sturgeon, striped bass and other native fish now have open access to swim upstream and spawn. The river is also in the heart of the beautiful New England countryside, which is popular for wildlife and scenic adventure. Hiking and wildlife tours are very popular activities in the area.
