The Chattooga River borders the South Carolina and Georgia border. Known as one of the wildest rivers in the region, the Chattooga is in the heart of pristine East Coast wilderness. The different sections of the river offer plenty of opportunity for mild scenic rides or exciting whitewater action. Chattooga water levels vary depending on rainfall in the area. Spring and early summer months give the best water levels. Later summer months tend to give slower and more relaxed rafting trips.

Forming the boundary between South Carolina and Georgia the Chattooga River (also spelled Chatooga, Chatuga, and Chautaga, variant name Guinekelokee River) is a gem in the South East. Flanked by a protective corridor since the 1974 congressional designation of the Chattooga as a "Wild and Scenic River", the Chattooga River is the Wilderness Experience in the Southeast.

The Chattooga watershed is made up of 180,000 acres in three states (SC, GA and NC) and composed of private and public lands. The river flows about 57 miles, until it runs later into Lake Yonah. Technically, the Chattooga River has been separated into various sections according to its “Wild and Scenic” designation. The majority of the river has been designated “wild” while only 14.6 miles of the river have been designates as “recreational”.

The Chattooga River is one of the only Class V option whitewater rapids for South Carolina rafting and Georgia rafting . During the high-water months, you can experience the best whitewater rafting around. There are also multiple options for horseback riding, including bringing your own mounts to designated trails within the National forest. Since many of the scenic areas along the river contain waterfalls and side trails, hiking and exploring are popular activities along the river.
