You don’t need to be a serious paddler to enjoy a trip down the spectacular Ahanssel as it gushes through the Middle Atlas Mountains cutting deep gorges and exciting rapids in it’s wake. This area is probably the lushest part of Morocco and the river is in parts sunken hundreds of metres underneath narrow red cliffs and in parts you can watch the world on the banks drift past beside you including some stunning sections of remote rocky forest, where you can get out of the water and stretch your legs and there are plenty of good spots to set up your tent at night under the clear Moroccan skies.
Though it seems dangerous and the terrain is nothing short of the 'sweeping vistas, deep chasms and arching pinnacles'; as my guide book promised, this is actually a pretty safe rafting trip. The rapids are quite small and the weather is good; the water is still cool, it comes from the Atlas snow melts, but it’s not freezing and you’ll enjoy the dip after all the sunshine.
I went with Water By Nature. We spent four days on the river, camping beside it at night and cooking traditional food and telling stories then a couple of days in Marrakech to finish.
